Starting a podcast sounds easy until you actually sit down to do it. You have an idea. You might already have a microphone. Maybe you’ve recorded a few episodes. Then you realize you need a podcast hosting platform, and suddenly you’re comparing things like storage limits, analytics, RSS feeds, monetization, websites, video hosting, and distribution.

Two of the names you’re likely to come across are Buzzsprout and Podbean.

Both are popular podcast hosting platforms, and honestly, both can do a very good job. The bigger question is which one makes more sense for your podcast.

Buzzsprout has always focused heavily on making podcasting simple. Podbean takes a more feature-packed approach, with tools for hosting, monetization, websites, analytics, video, AI, and even podcast networks. So, which one should you choose?

If you want the easiest experience, I’d lean toward Buzzsprout. If you want more features and better value for the money, Podbean is very hard to ignore. Let’s break down the differences.

What Is Buzzsprout?

Buzzsprout is a podcast hosting platform built around a fairly simple idea:

 Make podcasting easier.

That sounds obvious, but it’s actusually a pretty important selling point. There is already a lot to learn when you start a podcast.

You have to figure out how to record good audio, edit episodes, create cover art, write descriptions, promote your show, talk to guests, and keep coming up with new episode ideas.

You probably don’t want your podcast hosting dashboard to become another thing you have to study.

Buzzsprout keeps the publishing process straightforward. You upload your episode, write your show notes, choose when you want it published, and Buzzsprout handles the hosting and distribution side.

The platform also offers analytics, podcast websites, transcripts, subscriptions, listener support, dynamic content, advertising tools, custom players, and other features.

That’s why Buzzsprout is particularly popular with beginners. You can start with the basics and gradually use more of the platform as you become comfortable with podcasting.

What Is Podbean?

Podbean has been around for a long time too, but its approach is a little different. Instead of focusing almost entirely on keeping things simple, Podbean has built a much bigger collection of podcasting tools.

You can use it for hosting, distribution, analytics, podcast websites, monetization, audio, video, social sharing, and more. It has also added AI-powered tools.

For example, Podbean’s current plans include AI credits that can be used for things such as noise reduction, intelligent leveling, automated show notes, chapter markers, enhanced transcripts, and other AI features.

That’s quite a lot. And that’s really the main difference between the two platforms.

Buzzsprout vs Podbean Pricing

Let’s talk about money.

Buzzsprout currently has a free plan, but it comes with limits. You can upload two hours of content during each cycle, and episodes on the free plan are hosted for 90 days.

If you’re serious about publishing a podcast long term, you’ll probably want one of the paid plans.

Buzzsprout’s standard audio plan currently costs $15 per month when billed annually. That gives you up to 72 hours of upload allowance per year, along with unlimited episodes and premium features.

Podbean’s Unlimited Audio plan currently costs $12 per month when billed annually, or $17 per month if you pay monthly.

And here’s where Podbean gets interesting.

The plan includes 1GB of uploads per month, unlimited total storage, unmetered bandwidth, advanced statistics, a customizable podcast website, monetization features, and one-click distribution.

So if you’re looking strictly at what you get for your money, Podbean has an advantage.

You’re paying less annually while getting unlimited total storage. But there’s a catch.

Podbean’s monthly upload limit is still important. Unlimited storage doesn’t mean unlimited monthly uploads.

Still, for many regular podcasters, 1GB per month is plenty.

Which One Is Easier to Use?

This is where Buzzsprout wins. Podbean isn’t hard to use.

But it gives you more things to look at. When you open Podbean, you can find tools for analytics, monetization, websites, distribution, AI, video, and other features. That’s great if you need them.

But if you’re a beginner who simply wants to upload an episode every Tuesday, all those extra options can feel like a lot.

Buzzsprout is more focused. You upload an episode. Add your title. Write your description. Schedule it. Publish. Done.

That simplicity can save you time every week.

And when you’re running a podcast for months or years, small time savings can really add up.

Podcast Distribution

Distribution is something you don’t want to spend much time worrying about. Your listeners aren’t all using the same podcast app.

Some use Spotify. Some use Apple Podcasts. Others use YouTube Music, Amazon Music, Pocket Casts, Overcast, or another podcast player.

Both Buzzsprout and Podbean can distribute podcasts to major directories.

Buzzsprout says it supports distribution to Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, iHeartRadio, TuneIn, Overcast, Pocket Casts, Castbox, and other directories.

Podbean also provides one-click distribution to major directories, including Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Amazon Music, iHeartRadio, and others.

So this isn’t really an area where one platform completely destroys the other. Both can get your podcast out into the wider podcast ecosystem.

Buzzsprout vs Podbean Analytics

Analytics become much more useful once your podcast starts getting listeners. When you publish your first episode, you might be excited just to see a few downloads. After you’ve published 20 or 30 episodes, you’ll probably start asking more questions.

Which episode is getting the most attention?

Where are my listeners located?

Which apps are they using?

Are people listening to my newer episodes?

What topics seem to work best?

Buzzsprout provides advanced podcast statistics on its paid plans. Its platform is designed to present those numbers in a way that’s relatively easy to understand.

Podbean also provides advanced statistics, including information about listener locations, devices, sources, trends, and episode performance. It also offers features for comparing episodes and understanding listener behavior.

This is another situation where I’d give each platform a different advantage.

Buzzsprout is easier to understand.

Podbean gives you more depth and additional analytics tools.

If you’re a beginner, Buzzsprout’s approach may be better.

If you’re running a larger podcast and really want to dig into the numbers, Podbean has a lot to offer.

Monetization: Which One Is Better?

Eventually, you may want your podcast to make money. There are several ways to do that.

You can get sponsors, run ads, sell premium episodes, offer subscriptions, accept donations, or use your podcast to promote your own business.

Buzzsprout offers listener support, subscriptions, advertising tools, and dynamic content. Its subscription system lets creators offer things like bonus episodes, early access, and ad-free content.

Podbean is particularly strong in this area. Its current plans include Apple Podcasts subscriptions, an Ads Marketplace, dynamic ad insertion, and other monetization features.

Podbean also has a premium podcast system where creators can sell exclusive content and create paid channels.

This makes Podbean especially interesting if you’re thinking about turning your podcast into a business.

Of course, don’t make the mistake of thinking that signing up for a platform will automatically make you money.

It won’t. You need listeners first. But once you have an audience, having several monetization options can be very useful.

What About Video Podcasts?

This is probably one of the biggest changes in podcasting. Podcasting used to mean uploading an audio file.

Now, a lot of podcasters are recording video at the same time and publishing their shows on YouTube, Spotify, and other platforms.

Both Buzzsprout and Podbean support video.

Buzzsprout’s Audio + Video plan currently costs $25 per month when billed annually. It allows creators to publish video to Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and YouTube, with 1080p video support.

Podbean’s Unlimited Plus plan is $29 per month when billed annually and supports two audio or video podcasts. It includes 10GB of monthly uploads, which Podbean says is equivalent to up to 160 hours of audio or 10 hours of video.

Podbean has also added Apple Podcasts HLS support for video podcasts, which shows that the company is continuing to invest in video.

If video is a major part of your podcast strategy, Podbean deserves serious consideration. Buzzsprout is still a good option if you want a simple workflow. But Podbean gives you a lot of capacity and flexibility.

Podcast Websites

Both platforms can give you a website for your podcast.

Buzzsprout includes a premium podcast website with its paid plans. You can also connect your own URL.

Podbean also includes a customizable podcast website and allows you to map your own domain.

For a new podcaster, either one is perfectly fine. You don’t necessarily need to build a separate WordPress website on day one.

But if your podcast becomes a serious business, I’d recommend eventually having a website that you control.

You may want to publish transcripts, articles, newsletters, affiliate links, resources, videos, and other content. Having your own website gives you much more freedom.

AI Features

This is an area where Podbean has a noticeable advantage right now. Podbean includes AI credits with its paid plans.

Those credits can be used for things such as noise reduction, audio leveling, show notes, chapter markers, transcripts, and other AI-powered podcast tasks.

Buzzsprout also offers AI-related tools, including its Cohost AI add-on. It also offers Magic Mastering as an optional add-on for automatically improving audio quality.

So both platforms are moving toward AI-assisted podcast production.

The difference is that Podbean includes a larger collection of AI features directly within its plans, while some Buzzsprout AI capabilities are offered as add-ons.

If AI tools are important to you, Podbean has the stronger package right now.

Buzzsprout vs Podbean for Growing Podcasts

If your podcast is already getting traction, the answer changes.

Once you’re getting thousands of downloads, working with sponsors, publishing video, or running multiple shows, Podbean starts looking much more attractive.

Its Network plan currently supports unlimited audio and video podcasts, 40GB of monthly uploads, 3TB of monthly bandwidth, network-level analytics, and up to 50 team members.

That’s far beyond what most beginner podcasters need. But that’s the point. Podbean has room for a podcast operation to become much bigger.

Buzzsprout also supports multiple podcasts through its Multi-Podcast plans, but its overall approach remains more focused on keeping things simple.

Buzzsprout vs Podbean: Pros and Cons

Buzzsprout Pros

Buzzsprout is easy to use, has a clean publishing workflow, offers strong analytics, provides podcast websites, supports transcripts, and makes distribution straightforward.

It is particularly good for someone who doesn’t want to spend much time dealing with technical details.

Buzzsprout Cons

The biggest downside is the upload-based pricing model.

Your plan gives you a certain amount of new upload time, and unused upload hours don’t roll over.

If you publish long episodes frequently, you may need a more expensive plan.

Podbean Pros

Podbean offers a lot for the price.

You get unlimited total storage, unmetered bandwidth on the main plans, advanced analytics, monetization tools, websites, AI credits, audio and video support, and one-click distribution.

It’s also a good option if you think you might eventually run multiple podcasts.

Podbean Cons

The main downside is that the platform can feel more complicated.

There are simply more features to learn.

That’s great when you need them, but it can be slightly overwhelming when you’re publishing your first few episodes.

Final Thoughts: Buzzsprout or Podbean?

After comparing the two, I don’t think there’s a single winner for everyone. Buzzsprout is the better podcast host for simplicity. Podbean is the better podcast host for features and value.

If I were starting my first podcast tomorrow and had no idea what I was doing, I’d probably pick Buzzsprout.

I wouldn’t want to spend my first few weeks learning a complicated platform. I’d rather focus on recording episodes and finding listeners.

If I already knew what I was doing and wanted to build a bigger podcast business, I’d probably choose Podbean.

The unlimited storage, advanced analytics, monetization options, AI tools, and video capabilities give it a lot of room to grow.

Just don’t make the mistake of spending weeks choosing your podcast host while your microphone sits on your desk.

Your hosting platform isn’t what will make people come back every week.

Your content will. A great podcast can grow on Buzzsprout, Podbean, or plenty of other platforms.

So pick the one that fits your budget and your current needs, publish your first episode, and start learning from your audience.
