If you’ve been researching microphones for podcasting, you’ve probably seen two terms everywhere:

USB and XLR.

A USB microphone is pretty easy to understand. You connect it directly to your computer and start recording. An XLR microphone works a little differently.

Instead of plugging directly into your laptop, an XLR microphone normally connects to an audio interface, mixer, recorder, or another piece of compatible audio equipment. That extra equipment can make an XLR setup look complicated at first.

So why do so many podcasters, musicians, broadcasters, and recording studios use XLR microphones? The biggest reason is flexibility.

An XLR setup makes it easier to build a recording system around your needs, especially when you want to use multiple microphones or upgrade individual pieces of equipment later. Here’s what an XLR microphone is, how it works, and whether you actually need one.

What Is an XLR Microphone?

An XLR microphone is a microphone that uses an XLR connection to send its audio signal to compatible recording equipment.

The most common microphone XLR connector uses three pins. Unlike a USB microphone, a traditional XLR microphone generally can’t be plugged directly into a normal USB port on your computer. Instead, your setup might look like this:

What Is Balanced Audio?

One advantage commonly associated with XLR microphone connections is balanced audio.  A balanced connection is designed to help reject electrical noise and interference that can enter a signal along the cable.

This becomes particularly useful when you’re running longer cables. Imagine you’re setting up microphones across a studio or stage. Some cables may travel a significant distance before reaching the mixer or audio interface.

You don’t want every cable acting like an antenna and adding unwanted electrical noise to your recording.

Balanced XLR connections help make long cable runs practical. For a podcaster sitting three feet from a laptop, this may not be your biggest concern. But it’s one reason XLR became such an important professional audio standard.

Does an XLR Mic Plug Into a Computer?

Usually not directly. Most computers don’t have XLR microphone inputs. They have USB, USB-C, headphone connections, and other consumer ports. So you need something in between.

For most beginner podcast setups, that’s an audio interface. Your connection looks like this:

Many interfaces also provide headphone monitoring, speaker outputs, phantom power, and multiple microphone inputs.

If you’re buying your first XLR microphone, remember to include the cost of the interface and cable when planning your budget. The microphone alone isn’t necessarily the entire setup.

XLR Mic vs. USB Mic

This is the comparison most beginners care about. USB is easier. XLR is more flexible.

Why would you want the more complicated option? Because separate components are easier to change.

You’re building a modular recording system rather than relying on everything being inside one microphone.

Is XLR Better Than USB?

Not automatically. This is an important point. Some people assume:

XLR = professional

and

USB = amateur

That’s too simplistic. A good USB microphone used correctly can produce excellent podcast audio. A bad XLR setup can sound terrible. XLR’s biggest advantage isn’t that the connector somehow makes your voice sound amazing.

It’s the flexibility of the system around it. You can choose your microphone. You can choose your preamp or interface. You can connect multiple microphones more easily. You can replace individual pieces of equipment.

For a professional or growing studio, that’s valuable. For someone recording one podcast at a laptop, USB may be easier.

What Is Phantom Power?

Phantom power is a way of sending electrical power to compatible microphones through an XLR cable. You’ll often see a button labeled:

48V

on an audio interface or mixer.

If your condenser microphone requires 48V phantom power, you activate the appropriate phantom-power function according to the equipment manufacturer’s instructions.

The microphone can then receive the power it needs through the same cable carrying its audio connection.

You don’t need a separate power cable running to the microphone. It’s a clever system. But don’t turn phantom power on simply because the button exists. Check what your microphone requires.

Why XLR Is Great for Multiple Microphones

This is where XLR becomes particularly useful for podcasting. Imagine you’re recording four people in the same room.

Trying to connect four separate USB microphones to one computer can become awkward depending on your operating system and recording software.

With XLR, the setup is more straightforward. You can connect four XLR microphones to an audio interface, mixer, or recorder that has four suitable microphone inputs.

Now one device manages those microphone connections.

Even better, many recording setups allow each microphone to be recorded onto its own track. That’s incredibly useful during editing.

If one person is too quiet, you can increase their track. If another person coughs while someone else is talking, you may be able to reduce or mute the cough. Separate tracks give you control.

XLR Microphones and Gain

Gain is important when using XLR microphones. Your microphone produces a signal, and the preamp in your interface or mixer increases that signal to a useful level. Some microphones require more gain than others.

Certain low-output dynamic microphones, for example, may need a fairly capable preamp to reach comfortable recording levels without excessive noise.

This is why you shouldn’t buy an XLR microphone without thinking about what you’re connecting it to.

The microphone and interface work together. Check whether your interface provides enough clean gain for the microphone you want to use.

Do You Need a Microphone Booster?

You may see people using inline microphone boosters or preamps with certain dynamic microphones.

These devices provide additional gain before the signal reaches the main preamp. Do you need one?

Not necessarily. Modern audio interfaces vary considerably. Some can provide plenty of gain for popular dynamic microphones without an additional booster.

Before buying another piece of equipment, connect your microphone to your interface and test it.

If you can reach a healthy recording level without excessive noise, you probably don’t need to add another box to the signal chain.

Solve real problems instead of buying equipment in anticipation of them.

XLR Cables Matter, but Don’t Overthink Them

You’ll need an XLR cable to connect the microphone to your interface, mixer, or recorder. Buy a reasonably well-made cable from a reputable manufacturer.

You don’t need to spend hundreds of dollars on a short microphone cable because someone claims it will transform your voice. A properly functioning balanced XLR cable should reliably carry the signal.

For podcasting, durability and good connectors are often more useful considerations than exotic marketing claims. Also think about length.

Buy enough cable to reach comfortably without leaving huge coils of unnecessary cable across your desk.

Are XLR Mics Good for Podcasting?

Yes. They’re an excellent option, particularly for podcasters who want flexibility or need multiple microphones.

If you’re creating a permanent studio with two, three, or four people, XLR is often a practical choice.

Each person can have a microphone. Everything connects to a central interface, mixer, or recorder. You can monitor levels and potentially record everyone separately. For a solo beginner, however, XLR isn’t mandatory.

A good USB microphone can be much simpler. Don’t make your first podcast harder than necessary simply because you’ve seen expensive XLR setups on YouTube.

What Do You Need for an XLR Podcast Setup?

A basic setup doesn’t require much. You need an XLR microphone. You need an XLR cable.

You need an audio interface, mixer, recorder, or another compatible device with an XLR microphone input.

If you’re recording to a computer, connect that device to the computer. Then add headphones so you can monitor your recording. Your setup might look like:

XLR mic → XLR cable → Audio interface → Computer

That’s enough for a simple solo podcast. Add a microphone stand or boom arm and a windscreen or pop filter when appropriate. You now have a complete recording setup.

Final Thoughts

An XLR microphone is a microphone that connects to compatible audio equipment using an XLR connection. Unlike a typical USB microphone, it generally doesn’t plug directly into your laptop.

You’ll normally connect it to an audio interface, mixer, recorder, or podcast production console first. That means more equipment and a little more setup.

But you get flexibility in return. You can choose different microphones and interfaces. You can build multi-microphone studios. You can upgrade individual parts of your setup.
