Now imagine you have a co-host sitting beside you. You probably want two microphone inputs.
If you’re recording four people around a table, you’ll need a device capable of accepting enough microphones for everyone.

Mixers may give you more hands-on control over individual channels, routing, effects, and other functions.
Podcast-focused production devices can blur the distinction even further by combining microphone preamps, recording, mixing, sound pads, headphone outputs, processing, and computer connectivity in one box.
For a beginner recording one or two microphones, a simple audio interface may be all you need. Don’t buy a complicated mixer unless you have a reason for using those additional controls.

Your computer already has audio hardware. That’s why you can plug in headphones and hear music. So why buy an external audio interface?
A dedicated audio interface is built specifically for recording and monitoring audio with equipment such as XLR microphones and studio monitors.
It can provide microphone preamps, XLR inputs, gain controls, phantom power, dedicated headphone monitoring, and other recording features your computer’s built-in audio system may not provide.
Think of your computer’s built-in audio as something designed for everyday listening and basic communication. An audio interface is designed for more serious recording and playback needs.
Do Audio Interfaces Improve Sound Quality?
They can, but don’t expect magic. A good interface can give you reliable analog-to-digital conversion, useful preamps, sufficient clean gain, and proper connections for your recording equipment.
But buying an expensive interface won’t fix everything else. If you’re recording in a terrible room, you’ll still hear the room. If your microphone is badly positioned, the interface won’t move it for you.
If you’re clipping because you’ve set the gain incorrectly, expensive equipment won’t make clipping sound beautiful.
Your microphone, room, recording technique, interface, and editing all contribute to the finished sound. Don’t focus on one component while ignoring everything else.

There are plenty of beginner-friendly options from brands such as Focusrite, PreSonus, Audient, Universal Audio, MOTU, and others.
The Focusrite Scarlett series is particularly common in home studios and podcast setups. But don’t choose an interface simply because you’ve seen it on someone’s desk.
Compare the number of microphone inputs, connectivity, headphone features, preamp gain, software compatibility, and price.
The “best” interface for a solo podcaster may be completely wrong for a four-person interview show. Your setup determines what you need.
Do You Need an Audio Interface for Podcasting?
If you’re using a USB microphone, probably not.
If you’re using an XLR microphone with a computer, then yes—you’ll generally need an audio interface, mixer, recorder, or another device capable of accepting the XLR microphone and getting the audio into your recording system.
For a solo beginner, USB can be easier.
For a growing podcast with several microphones, XLR and an audio interface can give you much more flexibility.
There’s no prize for building the most complicated setup. Use what solves your problem.
