Look at a professional podcast studio, radio station, or recording studio and you’ll probably see a piece of equipment covered with knobs, buttons, sliders, and flashing lights. That’s an audio mixer.

At first, a mixer can look intimidating. There might be ten different channels. Every channel has several knobs. Some buttons have names you’ve never heard before. Then there are faders, meters, inputs, outputs, effects, and cables going everywhere.

But the basic idea behind a mixer is actually simple. An audio mixer allows you to take several audio sources, control them individually, and combine them into one or more outputs.

For a podcaster, those sources might be microphones, a computer, a smartphone, music, or sound effects.

Let’s look at what an audio mixer does, how it works, and whether you actually need one for your podcast.

What Is an Audio Mixer?

An audio mixer is a device used to receive, control, adjust, route, and combine multiple audio signals.

It’s sometimes called a mixing console or mixing board.

Imagine you’re recording a podcast with three people. You have three microphones. One person speaks quietly. Another person has a very loud voice. The third person sounds somewhere in the middle.

If all three microphones were treated exactly the same, your finished recording could sound unbalanced.

A mixer lets you control each microphone separately. You can increase the quiet person’s level. You can reduce the loud person’s level. You can make adjustments to each channel and then combine everything into the final mix.

That’s the basic job of an audio mixer.

How Does an Audio Mixer Work?

Think of a mixer as a central control station for your audio. You connect different audio sources to it. For example:

Microphone 1 → Mixer

Microphone 2 → Mixer

Microphone 3 → Mixer

Computer audio → Mixer

Each source can be assigned to a channel. A channel gives you controls for that particular audio signal.

Depending on the mixer, you may be able to adjust gain, volume, equalization, panning, effects, and routing. The mixer then sends the resulting audio to another destination.

That could be a computer, recorder, speakers, headphones, livestream, or several destinations at once.

The exact features depend on the mixer. Some are incredibly simple. Others are large professional consoles capable of handling dozens or even hundreds of audio sources.

What Is a Mixer Channel?

A channel is basically a path for one audio source. Let’s say you have a four-channel mixer. You might set it up like this:

Channel 1: Your microphone

Channel 2: Your co-host’s microphone

Channel 3: Your guest’s microphone

Channel 4: Music

Now you can control those sources individually. If the music is too loud, lower Channel 4.

If your guest is too quiet, adjust Channel 3. You don’t have to change everything at once. This individual control is one of the biggest reasons mixers are useful.

What Is Gain?

One of the first controls you’ll usually find on a mixer is gain. Gain controls the level of the signal entering the channel, often through the microphone preamp.

Microphones can produce relatively low-level signals. The preamp increases that signal to a useful level. If the gain is too low, the recording may be very quiet.

If you push the gain too high, the signal can overload the input and distort. That’s why setting gain properly is important.

Before recording, speak at roughly the same volume you’ll use during the podcast. Watch your meters.

Adjust the gain until you have a strong signal with enough room for louder moments without clipping.

Don’t simply turn every gain knob to maximum. More gain isn’t automatically better.

What Are Faders?

Faders are probably the controls people most strongly associate with mixing consoles. They’re the sliders that move up and down. A fader controls the level of a channel in the mix.

Imagine your guest starts speaking much louder during an interview. You can pull their fader down.

When they’re speaking quietly again, you can bring it back up if needed. Some smaller mixers use rotary knobs instead of full-size faders.

The idea is the same. You’re controlling how much of that particular channel is being sent into the mix.

Gain vs. Volume: What’s the Difference?

This confuses a lot of beginners. Gain and volume can both make something seem louder, but they control different stages of the signal path.

Gain generally controls the strength of the incoming signal at the preamp stage.

The channel fader or level control determines how much of that already-amplified signal is sent into the mix. A simple way to think about it is:

Gain gets the signal into the mixer at a healthy level.

The fader determines how much of that signal you want in the final mix.

That’s simplified, but it’s a useful starting point. Set your gain properly first. Then use the faders to balance the different channels.

What Is EQ on a Mixer?

EQ stands for equalization. It lets you adjust different frequency ranges in a sound. A basic mixer might give you controls for bass, midrange, and treble. More advanced mixers provide much more detailed EQ controls.

Suppose someone’s voice sounds too boomy. You might reduce some lower frequencies. If the recording sounds overly harsh or bright, you may adjust higher frequencies. EQ can be useful, but beginners often use too much of it. You don’t need to twist every knob simply because it’s there.

Start with a good microphone, good placement, and a decent recording environment. Then use EQ when you can identify a problem you’re actually trying to solve.

What Is Phantom Power?

If your mixer has microphone inputs, you may see a button labeled 48V. That’s phantom power.

Many condenser microphones require power to operate, and compatible mixers can send that power through an XLR cable.

Not every microphone needs it. Many dynamic microphones used for podcasting don’t require phantom power.

Check the instructions for your particular microphone. Don’t make a habit of randomly pressing buttons on audio equipment because they look interesting. Know what they’re doing first.

Audio Mixer vs. Audio Interface

This is where things become confusing because modern products often combine the two. An audio interface is primarily designed to get audio into and out of a computer.

You connect a microphone to the interface, and the interface converts the analog signal into digital audio your computer can record.

A mixer is primarily designed to combine and control multiple audio signals. But many modern mixers also have USB audio-interface capabilities. That means one device can do both jobs.

You can connect several microphones, control them using the mixer, and then send the audio digitally to your computer through USB. So do you need a mixer and an audio interface?

Not necessarily.

Depending on your equipment, one device may handle both roles.

Analog vs. Digital Mixers

Mixers can broadly be divided into analog and digital designs. An analog mixer typically gives you physical controls directly associated with the signal path. You turn knobs and move faders to make adjustments. They’re often straightforward once you understand the controls.

Digital mixers convert and process audio digitally and can offer far more features. You may get advanced EQ, compression, effects, presets, routing options, scene recall, multitrack recording, and software control.

Digital doesn’t automatically mean better. Analog doesn’t automatically mean outdated. Choose based on what you actually need. A beginner doesn’t need 100 features they’ll never touch.

Why Are Mixers Useful for Podcasting?

A mixer becomes particularly useful when your podcast gets more complicated. Imagine you’re recording four people in the same room. Each person has an XLR microphone. You also want to play intro music. Maybe you want to trigger sound effects. You need several headphone outputs. And perhaps you’re livestreaming the entire conversation.

Now having one central place to control everything becomes very useful. You can see your microphone levels. Adjust individual speakers. Mute channels. Play sounds. Control headphone mixes. And route audio where it needs to go.

That’s much easier than trying to manage everything separately.

What Is a Sound Pad?

Many modern podcast mixers include sound pads or programmable buttons. You press one and it plays a sound. That could be your intro. A music bed. A transition. A sound effect. An advertisement. Or anything else your mixer supports.

They’re useful for podcasts that want a more live, radio-style production. Instead of adding every sound during editing, you can trigger some elements while recording. But again, they’re optional.

A good conversation doesn’t become better because you’re pressing a sound-effect button every 30 seconds. Use them when they add something.

What Should You Look for in a Podcast Mixer?

Start with the number of microphone inputs. If you regularly record four people, make sure the mixer can actually handle four microphones. Then think about headphone outputs.

Each person should ideally be able to hear the conversation comfortably. Check whether the mixer can record separate tracks if that’s important to your workflow.

Look at computer connectivity. Consider whether you need sound pads, Bluetooth, onboard recording, effects, or advanced routing.

Also check whether the microphone preamps provide enough clean gain for the microphones you plan to use. Don’t choose based on the longest feature list. Choose based on your podcast.

For podcasting, that might mean managing several microphones, music, sound effects, phone calls, computer audio, or other sources from one central device.

Mixers can give you individual gain controls, faders, EQ, headphone monitoring, routing options, and many other features. But not every podcaster needs one.

If you’re recording alone with a USB microphone, keep your setup simple. If you’re running a multi-person podcast with several XLR microphones and different audio sources, a mixer can make your workflow much easier.

Don’t buy one because all the knobs make your desk look professional. Buy one when you actually need the control.

A good mixer doesn’t create the podcast for you. It simply gives you a better way to control everything your listeners are going to hear.
